John W. Rhoden (1916-2001) was a Birmingham-born, Brooklyn based sculptor whose talent won him accolades and took him around the world. Rhoden was the first African American visual artist fellow at the American Academy in Rome and traveled Europe, Asia and Africa supported by fellowships from Fulbright, Rockefeller, and Guggenheim foundations. While the John Rhoden Collection at PAFA contains over 275 sculptures in wood, metal and stone, Rhoden’s public sculptures have been on view for decades. On Wednesday, April 8, join Brittany Webb, Curator of the John Rhoden Collection for a look at Rhoden’s public works.
