Join us for the Opening Reception of Tether: A Solo Exhibition by Joseph Lazaro Rodriguez (MFA '19).  

The tether is a conduit, a binder, a transducer. It is the space and time between our thoughts and actions. Made of ether, of spirit, the tether connects the earthly mind and body then translates the experiences to become a part of the soul, the sum of our human existences.

So much of our lives and experiences as humans are documented and in some form, mediated. Points in time, demographics, biological data, photos, videos, text messages, emails, social media posts - all generated from our mind and body’s experiences, are uploaded and stored in ‘clouds’. These transformed electronic bits and bytes of data, later become information, become knowledge, become wisdom. Through short animations loops, multichannel video projection installations and sculptures, Tether reflects on the artifacts, aesthetics and architectural memories made by the body and mind, tethered to the modern soul for future retrieval and remembering.

Joseph Lazaro Rodriguez (b. 1969 Hoboken, NJ) (MFA '19) is a Cuban-American, multidisciplinary artist residing in Philadelphia. He studied Fine Arts at Pratt Institute, received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nursing, and received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts in 2019. He uses his personal experiences to create paintings, drawings, sculptures, and large scale multi-channel video installations. He is privately collected and has exhibited his work at The National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Wassaic Project in Wassaic, New York; Anna Zorina Gallery in New York, New York; Works on Paper Fine Arts Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and various other venues in the United States.
