End of the Day

Charles Burchfield

Exhausted workers trudge from the center of town up a long snow-covered road to their homes. The perspective in which the icy hill is depicted seems to lengthen the distance of their commute, while the sagging, worn buildings that line the street offer only bleak refuge. As in other images of small-town America painted by the artist during the 1920s, End of the Day evokes the hardships of the natural environment while it comments on the depressed industrial conditions endured by the working classes.
