[Grass and poison ivy]

Fidelia Bridges

Bridges' elegant watercolor captures in muted color and exquisite detail a handful of glasses and leaves isolated against a spare backdrop. Critics praised Bridges' work for bringing truthfulness to garden subjects through the simplicity of her style, and for combining the precision of the naturalist with the artistry of the painter. Her teacher and mentor, William Trost Richards, remarked that in Bridges' work, "one hears the voice of nature speaking in the idiom of art."
