Untitled (Long Red Wheeled Construction)
Jane South
'Untitled (Long Red Wheeled Construction)' is a wall sculpture composed of parts that resemble miniature architectural and mecahnical elements. The artist has created depth and a simulation of reality through carefully layering and cutting of heavy-gauge paper. South has also added to the realism of the individual elements through the use of ink and acrylic paint- the red in particular brings to mind old rusty metal. Thus, while sculpture may be the operative term in which to categorize South's practice, drawing is also at work here as well, as South's use of ink imbues the piece with a certain catoonish sensibility that only the act of drawing can bestow upon a surface. At left is a dome skylight inverted to face the viewer. At center is a cylinder-shaped slatted object that resembles the paddle wheel of a paddle-wheel steamship. The far right of the sculpture is punctuated by an air duct or a slatted manhole cover. These major elements of the piece are held in place by a laterally extending armature of what seems to be scaffolds, grids, ducts, and other industrial aspects of the urban infrastructure.
