STORIES FROM PAFA
Eric Pryor’s Leadership Brought Forth a Promising New Era for PAFA in Art and Education
As the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) reflects on recent accomplishments and prepares for a promising future and the re-installation of our permanent collection, we must honor the leadership of Eric Pryor. Since stepping into the role of President and CEO in January 2022, Eric has guided PAFA through a transformative period, expanding the institution's impact and reaffirming its commitment to art, art making, and art education. As Eric's tenure at PAFA concludes on December 31, 2024, we celebrate his lasting legacy and the profound impact he has had on the institution. His contributions will continue to guide PAFA as it embarks on an exciting new chapter.

A Visionary Leader
Eric Pryor brought extensive experience in arts leadership to PAFA. Before joining PAFA, he served as President of the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA), Executive Director of The Center for Arts Education, President of the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. With an extensive background and deep-rooted expertise in arts administration and community-building, he brought a strategic, creative, and collaborative approach to PAFA, positioning the institution for a forward-thinking, new era of growth.
Expanding Art, Art Making, and Art Education
During Eric’s tenure, PAFA reaffirmed its commitment to its core mission—art education and the celebration of American art. While the institution made the difficult decision to wind down its BFA and MFA degree-granting programs, this shift reflects a strategic move to refocus and deepen PAFA’s impact in other areas. His vision for PAFA extends beyond traditional boundaries, encompassing a broader, more inclusive approach to art education and community engagement. The future will see a greater emphasis on non-degree, certificate, and continuing education programs, creating new opportunities for artists and art enthusiasts of all ages.

Preserving PAFA's Legacy
One of Eric’s most important contributions is his leadership in securing the future of PAFA’s Historic Landmark Building (HLB). Working closely with the Board, Eric helped raise nearly $6.25 million for the HVAC rehabilitation project, ensuring better climate control for the building and its priceless collection of American art. HLB is anticipated to reopen to the public in 2025, in advance of the building’s 150th anniversary and the re-installation of our permanent collection in 2026, symbolizing a revitalization of the building and renewed dedication to preserving its artistic legacy.

Groundbreaking Exhibitions and National Recognition
Under Eric's tenure, PAFA presented two critically acclaimed exhibitions that garnered significant attention and acclaim:
Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America (March 23–December 31, 2023 at PAFA) was a collaborative exhibition between the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) and PAFA, where 20 acclaimed artists created works in response to the critical question, "Is the sun rising or setting on the experiment of American democracy?" Through installations that delved into themes of equality, free speech, and democracy, Rising Sun prompted reflection on our diverse perspectives in today’s climate.
Determined To Be: The Sculpture of John Rhoden (October 5, 2023–April 7, 2024), the first comprehensive retrospective of twentieth-century African American sculptor John Rhoden (1916-2001), featured approximately 70 sculptures in bronze, wood, and stone, and archival materials from the recently-processed John Rhoden Papers, that exemplify Rhoden’s ahead-of-his-time style, his visual and technical skill as an award-winning artist.

A New Era for PAFA
While serving as PAFA’s President and CEO, Eric’s leadership has been instrumental in crafting a blueprint for PAFA’s future—a vision that honors the Academy’s storied history while embracing institutional innovation, agility, and sustainability. This new direction is not just about preserving PAFA’s legacy but striving to build upon it to create a vibrant, dynamic arts ecosystem. This ecosystem will be anchored by a new creative and cultural hub that leverages PAFA’s unique facilities and prime location in Center City Philadelphia.
As PAFA moves into its next chapter, we thank Eric for his visionary leadership and tireless dedication to the Academy. His impact will be felt for years to come as PAFA continues to embrace new opportunities, nurture creative partnerships, and celebrate the transformative power of art and art-making.
