Faculty & Staff: Health Insurance Update on Coronavirus

PAFA is a member of the Philadelphia Area Independent School Business Officers Association (PAISBOA) Health Benefit Trust. Through our PAISBOA membership, faculty and staff PAFA health plan participants may receive needed testing and treatment for the coronavirus.

Immediately, the following enhancements have been made:

  • COVID-19 testing will be covered at no cost. During this public health crisis, Independence will cover testing as a preventive service and waive all cost‑sharing (such as co‑pays and coinsurance) for the COVID‑19 test when performed at a hospital or an approved laboratory.

  • Telemedicine visits through Doctor on Demand will be covered at no cost. To help reduce potential exposure, we are encouraging members to use telemedicine services through Doctor on Demand by waiving cost-sharing on these visits for the next 90 days.

  • Treatment will be covered. At this time, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for COVID‑19. Members should seek care from a medical doctor to help relieve symptoms as they would any other viral respiratory infections. Independence will continue to cover medically necessary health care costs to treat infectious diseases, including COVID‑19, based on the terms of the member’s insurance plan.

  • Prescriptions will be filled without restrictions. CVS has lifted prescription refill restrictions on maintenance medications, such as the “refill too soon” limit. We recommend that members call the CVS Pharmacy Services number on their CVS ID card if they require additional medication refills due to a potential quarantine situation.
