PAFA Welcomes Three New Members to Its Board of Trustees

PHILADELPHIA (April 12, 2018) – The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is pleased to announce three new members to its Board of Trustees.

PAFA Board Chair Kevin F. Donohoe said, “We are delighted to welcome these three exceptional individuals to the Board. The expertise, enthusiasm, and energy they bring to the table will be invaluable in continuing to fulfill PAFA’s mission of promoting the transformative power of art and art making.”

The new trustees are:

MARIANNE DEAN is a Founding Partner of Globalislocal, a group of women in Philadelphia that came together in 2005 to learn about global issues and impact philanthropy, to meet leading social innovators, and leverage their resources to invest in solutions to extreme poverty. Ms. Dean has been a Women’s Board member at PAFA since 2010 and served on the USArtists: American Fine Art Show committee prior to that. She co-chaired PAFA’s Annual Student Exhibition Preview Party in 2015 and frequently purchases student work from the Exhibition. She was a member of the Peale Circle, PAFA's leadership-level membership group, from 2012 to 2015, and supports the Make a Name at PAFA scholarship program. Ms. Dean, who resides in Villanova, PA, is vice chair of Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Charter School, a former trustee and head of the Parents’ Association at The Haverford School, and Women’s Board Member at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Ms. Dean is also a member of the Philadelphia Academy Ball committee.

Ms. Dean said: “I am truly honored to be part of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I hope that my past board experience in both private and charter school education along with my love of the arts will prove to be an asset in any endeavors I have with the Board of Trustees.”

GERARD “GERRY” CUDDY is President, CEO and Chairman of the Board at Beneficial Bank. Through Mr. Cuddy, Beneficial Bank has sponsored PAFA’s Annual Student Exhibition since 2013. His son, Graham Cuddy, is currently enrolled in PAFA’s coordinated Bachelor of Fine Arts program with the University of Pennsylvania as a painting major. Mr. Cuddy has commissioned work by PAFA students and alumni for the bank as well as for his personal collection. Mr. Cuddy, of Rosemont, PA, is President and Director of The Beneficial Foundation and is a trustee for both the Foreign Policy Research Institute and the Police Athletic League. He is a member of the Chairman’s Advisory Committee for the World Affairs Council and a former trustee on the Education and Finance Committees of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Mr. Cuddy currently serves on the boards of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, the Philadelphia Union League, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia Community Depository Institution Advisory Council.

Mr. Cuddy said: "I'm excited to join the Board of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It's a world-leading college and museum that celebrates art to positively transform the way we view the world. To be a part of this community is an unparalleled honor."

WALTER W. BUCKLEY III is Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Actua (formerly ICG and Internet Capital Group). Mr. Buckley founded Internet Capital Group in 1996 and prior to that he was Vice President of Acquisitions for Safeguard Scientifics, Inc., where he led many of Safeguard’s investments through the mid-1990s, including Diamond Technology, ChromoVision, and Video Server. Before Safeguard, Mr. Buckley was President and Co-Founder of Centralized Management Systems Inc., a medical supply company, which he sold in 1987. Previously, he spent three years at CoreStates in the commercial lending group. Mr. Buckley, who lives in Wayne, PA, with his wife Susan, is a Board Member and Former Chairman of the Starfinder Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the personal growth of underserved youth through soccer. He is also on the Board of Advisors of the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative and the Board of Visitors of the Kenan-Flagler Business School at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Buckley said: “I’m excited to join the Board of such a wonderful institution as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Having attended the annual Bacchanal Wine Gala & Auction (PAFA’s flagship fall fundraiser) in the past, I’m looking forward to devoting more of my time to the PAFA community.”
