How to Access

Using the "From Home" links below, these databases can be accessed off campus:

  1. Enter your student user name and password to log in.
  2. The database should read "Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts" somewhere on the first page to verify access.

Covers fine, decorative and commercial art, as well as architecture and video. More than 770 full-text journals (see list here), 220 full-text books and 63,000 images.

JSTOR provides access to more than 12 million journal articles, books, images, and primary sources in 75 disciplines. JSTOR includes full runs of more than 2,600 top scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Institutions may choose from 17 multi-discipline collections and 18 discipline-specific collections.

AskART

Provides information on more than 52,000 North American artists.  The summary page for each artist links to digital images, biographies, the artist's books and articles published within the last 20 years, museum holdings, artwork for sale, art dealers, as well as auction/sales information and citations regarding the artist's information.

eBook Academic Collection

A collection of over 200,000 eBooks, including titles from leading university presses such as Oxford University, MIT, Cambridge University, Harvard University, Ashgate Publishing Ltd. and many others. Coverage includes: Art, Business & Economics, Education, Literary Criticism, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Poetry, Political Science, Religion, Social Science, Technology and other fields.

EBSCO eBooks are available from the user’s browser in PDF and ePub format, where available. A user does not have to download an eBook in order to read it. Downloading an eBook to a portable device requires the use of Adobe Digital Editions.

American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collections

The AAS Historical Periodicals Collection contains more than 6,500 historical periodical titles documenting the life of America’s people from the Colonial Era through the Civil War and Reconstruction and into the early 20th century. The collection is grouped in five series which are chronological in nature. The five series can be searched together or separately.

  • Series One: Over 500 titles from 1691 through 1820
  • Series Two: Over 1000 titles dating from 1821 through 1837.  
  • Series Three: Over 1,800 titles dating from 1838 through 1852
  • Series Four: Over 1,100 titles dating from 1853 through 1865
  • Series Five: Over 2,500 titles dating from 1866 through 1877.

These citation databases, searchable together, cover material published between 1975 and 2007.

The Getty Web site offers both basic and advanced search modules for BHA and RILA, and they can be searched easily by subject, artist, author, article, or journal title, as well as other elements.

A list of journals cited in BHA (PDF, 27pp., 308 KB) can be downloaded. BHA includes articles from over 1,200 journals.

British Museum Publications: Museum research catalogues, publications, and journals written by staff and external experts.

Canadian Online Art Book Project: Founded in 2013, the Canadian Online Art Book Project is a growing digital library of books–all original works commissioned by the Art Canada Institute–by the country’s leading art experts on artists who have made a critical contribution to the evolution of the nation’s art history.

Fundacion Juan March (Madrid): The Fundación Juan March presents to the public its on-line gateway to the complete content of each of the 205 catalogues accompanying the exhibitions held at its three venues since 1973, in Madrid, Cuenca (the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español) and Palma de Mallorca (the Museu Fundación Juan March).

Getty Publications Virtual Library: More than 300 Getty publications to download and read for free.

Getty Research Portal: A free online search platform providing worldwide access to an extensive collection of digitized art history texts from a range of institutions. This multilingual and multicultural union catalog affords art historians and other researchers the ability to search and download complete digital copies of publications devoted to art, architecture, material culture, and related fields.

Guggenheim Museum Publications: Guggenheim Museum publications provided by the Internet Archive.

HathiTrust Digital Library: A partnership of academic and research institutions, offering a collection of millions of titles digitized from libraries around the world. “Full View” books are readable online but cannot be downloaded. Examples: Gods, saints, & heroes : Dutch painting in the age of Rembrandt and Gemini G.E.L. : art and collaboration / Ruth E. Fine

Heritage Preservation (World Monuments Fund): Extensive publications on heritage preservation issues.

Internet Archive Open Library: A free digital library with over 45,000 art titles. 

Latsis Foundation E-Library: Publications of cultural, artistic and historical interest to researchers in Greek art and archaeology. 

Metropolitan Museum of Art PublicationsMetPublications is a portal to The Met’s comprehensive publishing program including books, online publications, and Bulletins and Journals from the last five decades.

MoMA Exhibitions: Exhibitions from MoMA’s founding in 1929 to the present. Several include downloadable pdfs of older exhibition catalogs, checklists, installation images, press releases and more. 

National Gallery of Art Publications: The National Gallery of Art’s publishing program balances an allegiance to the art and craft of the printed book with a commitment to the utility and accessibility of digital and online formats. Free Backlist titles here. 

OSCI Museum Catalogues: The Getty’s Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative provides access to catalogues from

Smithsonian Books Online: The Smithsonian Libraries’ online books. Most books available here are in the Public Domain unless otherwise noted, and are therefore free to download, use, re-use, and re-mix without regard to copyright. 

Video Art & Artists Essays: PDFs of essays commissioned by the Video Data Bank on the subject of video art and artists, as well as a range of essays about individual artists’ work.
